A Rainy Day in Innsbruck, Austria
Over Valentine's Day weekend this past February, D and I hopped in a car with two dear friends and we made our way to Austria for a few days of exploring. We spent our first 2 days of the weekend wandering the hills of Salzburg, but on our drive back to Germany, decided a night in Innsbruck would be a perfect finale to our weekend away. Just as you'd expect for most European cities in the crux of winter, we were greeted with clouds and rain upon arriving to Innsbruck. Does that stop us from sight-seeing? Not a chance! If we stopped traveling whenever rain threatened a trip, we'd never see any part of Europe! Armed with umbrellas, we hit the puddled pavement in search of all the fun Innsbruck had to offer. The city was charming, with brightly colored buildings and sweet wrought-iron signs hanging above various shops along the main shopping drags. Clouds loomed over bell towers and hid the mountains surrounding the city, giving off an eerily beautiful feeling as you strolled through the squares and quaint alleyways. While some parts of Innsbruck have been modernized, the Old Town area still pays homage to its historic roots with numerous museums, stunning Tyrolian architecture, and traditional Alpine restaurants that are almost too delicious for words. We spent most of our time here ducking in and out of bars (to escape the rain), eating some of the most outstanding Greek food I'd ever tried (in Austria, no less!), and snapping dozens of photos of Innsbruck's mountainside charm. While you won't need a week here, a quick weekend visit (rain or shine!) does just the trick!
