Füssen, Germany

Late last summer, D and I took a little trip down to Liechtenstein...well...just to say we'd been to Liechtenstein. When in Europe, right? ;) After sight-seeing there, we drove along the Alps back to Germany for a little Bavarian R&R. I have gobs and gobs of gorgeous photos from our short 18-hour stay in Liechtenstein (a diamond in the rough, that country!), but I was feeling a little nostalgic for a Germany recap post, so I'm skipping Liechtenstein for now and sharing the last part of that weekend trip today. Füssen is a small Bavarian town just a hop, skip, and jump away from a very famous castle you all should be familiar with thanks to Walt Disney (say it with me NEU-SCHWAN-STEIN). We had plans to visit this castle for a second time, hoping for better views this go-round, so we decided to stay near the castle and in the vicinity of a few more attractions to get the most vacation for our time and money. Füssen just happened to be one of those attractive towns worth exploring!

In true Germany fashion, the gray clouds hovered and the rain drizzled off and on during our visit. It was also unseasonably cold for this particular time of year. I'm talking late-August and it was chilly and windy enough to need a light jacket and scarf. Like the good travelers we are, we grabbed our umbrellas and headed out to explore anyway! We wandered the almost empty streets, stopped by Hohes Schloss (local castle), admired the turquoise river that winded along the edge of town, and ate a yummy lunch at a small Greek restaurant when the rain began to pour. Simple day for a simple town just below the Alps. While not my favorite Bavarian city, it was nice reprieve from the tourist-filled area of Neuschwanstein...especially on a rainy Sunday. Füssen is small enough to do in one day and kitschy enough to feel perfectly German. Grab a cup of coffee at any one of their quaint cafes and you'll be feeling like a local in no time. Germany's good at that. :)
